Reisgids Silk Road (China) - Monks, Warriors & Merchants | Odyssey
Reisgids Silk Road (China) - Monks, Warriors & Merchants | Odyssey
To the modern reader, the Silk Road conjures up images of fabled cities and exotic lands, of long-gone empires and great conquerors. Place names such as Samarkand, Bukhara, Khotan or Chang'an continue to fascinate with the richness of their past. In this authoritative book, Luce Boulnois explores the encounter between East and West across the vast continental expanse that separates the Mediterranean world from the Chinese one. She unravels in a clear and compelling way the complex threads that make up the history of these great overland trade routes, which allowed the transmission across the world of ideas and beliefs, techniques and works of art, helping to shape the civilizations that flourished along the way. How did the Romans, following in the footsteps of the Greeks, discover these far-flung regions? What did the Chinese know of the European world? How did they manage to keep the secret of silk manufacture safe for centuries? Did Marco Polo really go to China, or was he just a c…

Reisverhaal Minarets in the Mountains | Tharik Hussain
Reisverhaal Minarets in the Mountains | Tharik Hussain
A magical, eye-opening account of a journey into a Europe that rarely makes the news and is in danger of being erased altogether. Another Europe. A Europe few people believe exists and many wish didn't.   Muslim Europe. Londoner Tharik Hussain sets off with his wife and young daughters around the Western Balkans, home to the largest indigenous Muslim population in Europe, and explores the regions of Eastern Europe where Islam has shaped places and people for more than half a millennium.   Encountering blonde-haired, blue-eyed Muslims, visiting mystical Islamic lodges clinging to the side of mountains, and praying in mosques older than the Sistine Chapel, he paints a picture of a hidden Muslim Europe, a vibrant place with a breath…

What is truth? (Paperback)
What is truth? (Paperback)
What is truth? is a clear and comprehensive introduction to the Philosophy of Science, that will equally appeal to students of the Humanities, the Social Sciences and the Natural Sciences. With a solid footing in the history of classical philosophy, the book offers an in-depth discussion of Karl Popper, Thomas Kuhn, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Jacques Derrida and Bruno Latour, among others. The book discusses recent developments in the Philosophy of Science, such as post-Kuhnian philosophy and the current interest in “objectivity”. According to Chunglin Kwa, there is not one rationality of science but several, each with its own logic and legitimate claim to truth. Six such styles of scientific reasoning can be established, pervading the sciences (including the humanities) in different combinations. The latter focus provides the book with an outstanding interdisciplinary outlook. Chunglin Kwa teaches at the University of Amsterdam. What is truth? is a translation of Wat is waarheid?, published

Blinded by Curiosity (Paperback)
Blinded by Curiosity (Paperback)
This book explores a phenomenon in the history of print collecting that has never been extensively investigated: the cutting and pasting of prints in the Early Modern period. The book focuses on the colourful Dutch classical scholar and libertine Hadriaan Beverland (1650-1716). Beverland was banished from the Dutch Republic in 1679 for publishing blasphemous, heterodox, and provocative scholarly texts on sex and sin. Books that dealt with e.g. prostitution in ancient times, original sin as the first act of sexual intercourse, and the sexual lust of women, were considered dangerous to Dutch public morality. In 1680, Beverland fled to England, where his friend Isaac Vossius took him in. It was here that Beverland began cutting (nowadays) costly etchings and engravings and arranging the cuttings into collages. These collages, which again demonstrated his interest in sexual matters, survived in two illustrated manuscripts, now in the British Library and the Bodleian Library (Oxford). This

Futuring Spaces of Possibility (Paperback)
Futuring Spaces of Possibility (Paperback)
Futuring Spaces of Possibility explores how contemporary art and architecture address urban, social and ecological challenges and create new possibilities for the future city. It invites urban theorists, curators, artists and architects to use Bruges, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as a testbed for new spatial imaginaries. How to deal with transformation and degrowth in a city whose boundaries have been shaped by its medieval history? How to question dominant histories, use underutilised public space and set in motion new cohabitations in the city? This book is published on the occasion of Bruges Triennial 2024: Spaces of Possibility, curated by Shendy Gardin and Sevie Tsampalla. Featuring contributions by the twelve artists and architects in the exhibition, it offers insights into the research processes behind the commissions, through texts, archival images, preparatory sketches and interviews. Newly commissioned essays address issues of urban transformation and the role that

The architecture Museum effect/ de effecten van architectuurmusea (Paperback)
The architecture Museum effect/ de effecten van architectuurmusea (Paperback)
Recent developments show a shift in the themes that architecture museums programme: apparently, social and activist subjects are supplanting classical architectural themes. It is a development expressed by recent exhibitions of both renowned institutes and younger ones. By the looks of it, thematic choices are furthermore increasingly influenced by the social and political contexts of institutes. In terms of storage, new developments such as digitization also lead to radical changes, with consequences that are difficult to predict. OASE 99 analyses and questions these developments and their impact on the current and future role of architecture museums. OASE provides the context for understanding the current situation and examines what part architecture museums can play in the future of architecture culture.

Caravaggio in detail (Paperback)
Caravaggio in detail (Paperback)
'Caravaggio in Detail' is the fourth title in the successful In Detail series, following Van Eyck, Bruegel and Bosch. The Italian genius Caravaggio is considered one of the most important artists of the Baroque era. The Italian master's painting style was groundbreaking, not only because of his unique treatment of light and shade, but above all for his unprecedented realism: instead of the customary idealised figures, he painted everyday, working-class people, even in religious scenes. This book explores Caravaggio's turbulent life and his equally dramatic work in a surprising way. The book is divided into themed chapters: Still Lifes, Hidden Self-Portraits and Stimulated Senses, and shows the paintings as never before, in full-page details.
