Bij het uitkijkpunt op Mulholland Drive wordt het levenloze lichaam gevonden van Dr. Stanley Kent. Als Harry Bosch de zaak onderzoekt, ontdekt hij dat Kent toegang had tot vrijwel de gehele voorraad radioactieve stoffen van de ziekenhuizen in LA. En dat daaruit kort geleden een grote hoeveelheid dodelijk materiaal verdwenen is. Wat aanvankelijk een routineonderzoek leek, blijkt plotseling een belangrijke en vooral urgente kwestie. Nu de nationale veiligheid in het geding is, claimen anderen deze zaak. In een poging het land te behoeden voor een terroristische aanslag staat Bosch tegenover nietsontziende terrorismebestrijders, de FBI én zijn voormalige geliefde Rachel Walling.

De dertigjarige Chantal Zwart is journaliste bij RLP, een radiostation in Midden-Frankrijk. Op een ochtend is de Nederlander Peter Versloot haar interviewgast. Samen met de jonge, zeer aantrekkelijke Tamara bewoont de oud-zakenman een landgoed bij het dorp Rebeyrat. Versloot heeft een boek over zijn leven in Frankrijk geschreven, waarvan nu ook een Franse vertaling op de markt zal komen.
