    The far north of Canada, north of 60 degrees, consists of three territories; the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. Until now, there has never been a proper map of the territory that was carved off from the NWT a quarter century ago. With only 30,000 people and a scattering of settlements, Nunavut is larger than western Europe in area. This map took us years to prepare, using 1:250,000 government topo maps as a base and tracing thousands of little lakes. The traditional passageway of the fabled Northwest Passage is also shown. The most northerly civilian community in the world is on the map – Grise Bay, as well as Alert, the most remote place on earth. Originally, the NWT covered all of northwestern North America west of the Louisiana Purchase and the Loyalist colonies, and north of the Spanish provinces (essentially north of current day Sactamento). This is actually our second attempt at mapping the western portion of Canada; the first covered everything from northwestern Ontario to the Pacific Ocean and, while it was an excellent map, the scale that such a huge area covered necessitated severe problems. In this version, all of British Columbia, Alberta, and the Yukon have been mapped from fresh digital data and presented at 1:1.4T scale. This would have been impossible when we prepared the first map. The Northwest Territories portion had to be compressed in two ways; first, the scale is 1:2M; second, only the portion with roads is shown. This is still an extremely large area. One has to consider the actual size of Canada when designing a map. Most countries in Europe would fit into this area, which only covers 20% of Canada.     Australia was one of the first countries ITMB published, back in the 1980s, albeit a licensed version. Our own original artwork was completed in the mid-1990s, but until recently, we have not focused on sectional maps of the country based on individual states. In 2019, we published Brisbane and Queensland, and Sydney and New South Wales. Now, we are issuing the ‘middle’ states of South Australia and Northern Territory to provide better coverage of these important parts of Australia at a better scale than a country map could provide. South Australia can be thought of as having two parts; the fertile farming economy surrounding Adelaide in the south and the much more arid northern portion. The road network in the south tends to be well developed, with paved roads going more or less east-west to NSW and WA. Northerly roads tend to be gravel or dirt, such as the Birdville Track, and the north-westerly roads tend to pass through land ceded to aboriginals and require permits. Northern Territ…

    The first edition was published in 2000 using artwork under licence. This edition uses original ITMB artwork. Side 1 covers Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island as well as Quebec s Magdalen Islands at a scale of 1:800,000. This side also includes the Top 10 Attractions of the three provinces. The second side is devoted to the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, with the much smaller island portion being a half-page inset at 1:150,000 scale and the larger mainland portion being at 1:1,700,000. The northernmost tip of Quebec/Labrador belongs to Nunavut. St. Pierre et Miquelon, a French overseas possession just south of Newfoundland Island, is also included, as well as the map s only urban inset, historic St. John s, one of North America s oldest cities. The map also includes a listing of 9 Top Attractions. The Canadian province of Ontario is intimidatingly large. It is also mostly tundra with extremely few settlements and few roads; in fact, the geographic centre of Ontario is about 1,500 kms north of the nearest road. The very first map I prepared, at age 10, was of Ontario; and it took me six weeks to trace all the lakes. My point is that the developed portion of the province is a much smaller wedge of fertile ground south of the mineral belt of the Great Canadian Shield. This double-sided map focusses on the area south of Sudbury and North Bay and expands the scale to a much more useful purpose for most users. Imagine Detroit in the southwest corner of the map, with Highway 401 joining it to London and Toronto and a branch motorway cutting across to Buffalo.     Italy is a very densely populated country, requiring sectional maps to portray its complex road/rail network in sufficient detail to make sense. This is a brand new title for ITMB, covering the central portion of the peninsula from Naples north to Florence on side one, and includes a large inset map of Sardinia. Side two covers the vast expanse of the north of the country, from the high alpine valleys of D’Aosta and Trentino to the plains of northern Italy and the coastal provinces of the Mediterranean and Adriatic coastlines. The immediate border areas of France and Switzerland are included, but the extensive plate name index covers most of those countries. Motorways (in blue) tend to be toll highways. Multi-lane highways (in magenta) and principal highways (in green) tend to be non-toll. Following the division of the NWT in to Nunavut (future map, coming soon), and nick-named BOB (back of beyond) the NWT remains a wild and fierce environment occupying a huge expanse of lakes and tundra in Canada’s north.
